BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY
STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK
BINGHAMTON, NY 13902
Binghamton has five undergraduate schools: Harpur College, (the liberal arts component); the School of Education and Human Development; the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering, Applied Science and Technology; the School of Management; and the School of Nursing. The descriptions which follow explain the transcripts for each of these undergraduate schools and the information noted thereon.
The Graduate School at the University Center also offers programs in the Arts and Sciences, Management, Nursing, Education and Human Development, and Engineering, Applied Science and Technology. Graduate work appears on a separate transcript.
THE COURSE NUMBER SYSTEM
Course numbers consist of three significant digits.
Fall 1987 to Present
100-299 are lower division undergraduate courses
300-499 are upper division undergraduate courses
500 (5000 for some programs) and above are graduate courses.
September 1973 to August 1987
100-149 (1000-1499 for SEHD*) are undergraduate courses.
150-299 (1500-2999 for SEHD*) are intermediate or advanced undergraduate courses.
300 and above (3000 for SEHD*) are graduate courses.
*SEHD was formerly SGSPE.
Prior to September 1973
100-199 (1000-1999 for SEHD*) are undergraduate courses.
200-299 (2000-2999 for SEHD*) are intermediate courses open to advanced undergraduate and graduate students.
300 and above (3000 for SEHD*) are graduate courses.
Not all departments number courses according to this schema.
*SEHD was formerly SGSPE.
Beginning with the Fall 1990 semester, the suffix -WE in the departmental abbreviation identifies a "writing emphasis" course (substantial writing experience in the particular discipline in which the course is offered requiring a minimum of 20 pages of writing); the suffix -W identifies a "writing" course (considerable writing experience requiring a minimum of 10 pages of writing).
Prior to Fall 1990, the suffixes -U and -L in the department abbreviation identified "upper" and "lower" level writing emphasis courses respectively.
CROSS-DISCIPLINARY STUDY
At Binghamton, students enrolled in one undergraduate school may take courses offered by another school of this University. In such instances, the grading system of the course is generally determined by the school offering the course. The grade-point averages and transcript entries are determined by the school in which the student is officially enrolled.
Unless footnoted to the contrary, all credits that appear on a matriculated student's transcript are applied to progression toward a degree.
HARPUR COLLEGE
Harpur College has employed four different grading systems since its founding in1946. Each of the four grading systems is described below along with an explanation of what time each system was in effect. Harpur College transcripts do not include notations for academic actions of probation, suspension, or dismissal. Unless otherwise noted, the transcript is a complete semester-by-semester record of all courses taken and grades received regardless of whether or not the grade is included in the GPA computation.
Rate of Progress and Grade Point Averages
June 1992 to Present
Beginning in June, 1992, Grade Point Averages and Dean's List notations are included on students' transcripts for anyone enrolled at that time and thereafter, including courses taken in semesters prior to June 1992, except that grades in courses taken prior to June 1985 are not computed in the GPA due to the policies in effect at that time. To maintain satisfactory academic progress, students are required to earn a minimum GPA of 2.0 in all courses taken for credit.
June 1985 through May 1992
Grade Point Averages are NOT included on students' transcripts. GPA is computed only for determination of financial aid eligibility and monitoring of satisfactory rate of progress. To maintain satisfactory academic progress, students are required to earn a minimum GPA of 2.0 in all courses taken for credit.
August 1979 through May 1985
No Grade Point Average is computed. A student's continued enrollment is dependent upon maintenance of satisfactory progress i.e., not receiving more than two F grades or three D grades during the last eight courses taken.
GRADING SYSTEMS
(Transcripts for students enrolled prior to September 1979 reflect either a continuation of the September 1971 through July 1979 system, or a combination of the September 1979 through July 1979 system and the present system.)

SCHOOL OF EDUCATION AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
(Prior to July 1987 known as School of General Studies and Professional Education - SGSPE)
September 1981 to Present - To remain in good academic standing, SEHD students enrolled in degree programs are expected to make satisfactory toward the degree. In SEHD satisfactory progress is defined as maintaining a grade-point average of 2.0 in all courses taken (whether or not in SEHD). The grade-point average is calculated on a 4.0 scale. The January 1981 to Present grading policy remains in effect.
Present Grading System - A grade-point average is computed for all courses taken, and includes minus grades. All courses attempted are included on the transcript with an indication of the semester they were taken. SEHD transcripts do not include notations for academic actions of probation, suspension, or dismissal. Effective Fall 1987, SEHD transcripts reflect academic honors awarded (semester Dean's list).
