Requirements for double majors are listed separately on individual reports.

Minimum Total Credit Hours

DARS shows credit hours completed, credit hours in-progress, and credit hours remaining to complete minimum credit requirements. Additional credits may be needed to meet degree requirements. Remember, though, that you can complete the total hours required and still need to complete course requirements. Total credit hours is only part of the picture.

Cumulative, Major, and Minor GPA's

Grade-point averages are computed for students in all of the University's undergraduate schools. Each letter grade is assigned a quality point as follows:

A = 4.0

C+ = 2.3

A- = 3.7

C = 2.0

B+ = 3.3

C- = 1.7

B = 3.0

D = 1.0

B- = 2.7

F = 0.0

These grade values are combined with course credit hours to produce a grade-point average. Cumulative GPA's are based on all Binghamton coursework. Major GPA's are based on courses used for major completion.

TR

This course is a transfer course. Transfer course grades will not be calculated in your grade point average. The DARS report also shows information about the transfer course right after the grade of TR. It shows either the title (for Schools of Management, Nursing, and Engineering) or the Binghamton course equivalency (for Harpur College).

See your advising office if you think transfer courses are missing from the report. We may not have received a transcript from the sending school or some courses may not have been accepted for transfer.

HS

This is a recognition of a high school foreign language courses. It is used for those students who have an admissions deficiency in foreign language. They do not count for credit towards the degree.

<return to sample DARS

IP

This is an in-progress course (a course you are taking now). If you are taking a course with a pass/fail grading option, DARS will not allow the course to be used in a requirement that does not accept pass/fail grades. If you are taking a course as an audit, DARS will not allow credit for the course.

Zero-credit Courses

There are several reasons that a course may carry no credits: it is audited, it is a repeated course, some music or LA&C courses naturally carry zero credits, or it has a grade of F. All no-credit courses are shown in the section of the report near the bottom, titled "COURSES THAT EARNED ZERO CREDIT."

Pass/Fail Courses

Some courses, such as PE courses, are offered only with a grading option of pass/fail. You may choose to take other courses as pass/fail. Courses that are in-progress and taken as pass/fail are listed separately in the in-progress section of the DARS report.

There are restrictions in each of the schools on how pass/fail courses may be used:

All schools - courses taken pass/fail do not count toward the general education requirements (with the exclusion of PE courses).

Harpur - No more than 24 credits of pass/fail (excluding courses offered only pass/fail) allowed. Many departments do not allow pass/fail courses to count toward the major.

Human Development - No more than four courses of pass/fail (excluding courses offered only as pass/fail) allowed. These cannot count toward the major.

Managment - The grade of P may be given only in internship, teaching practicum, independent study, or readings and research course work. This grading option is available only with the consent of both the instructor and the school's Advising Office.

Nursing - General elective credit may be taken pass/fail.

Engineering - No more than four free-elective credits for Computer Science and two free-elective credits in Electrical Engineering may be taken pass/fail.
