What is DARS?

DARS, or Degree Audit Reporting System, is a computer program that provides progress-toward-degree reports for students. A DARS report shows all of the requirements needed to receive a degree, and which courses are used to satisfy those requirements.

How do I get my DARS?

There are two ways to get a copy of your DARS report.

You can view your DARS report online at the BUSI Web Center. You will need your Social Security number and your PAC (Personal Access Code). You can also choose to run unofficial "what-if" reports for other majors via DARS online. The "what if" reports are only an idea of how your courses may be used in a different major. Check with an academic advisor for information on how changing your major would affect your progress toward degree.

You can order an offical printed DARS report at the Office of the University Registrar for a $2.00 fee. The report is usually available on the next business day. We require the following to order a DARS report:

When is DARS available?

DARS online is available from 8 am to 11pm via the BUSI Web Center. Students who have declared candidacy for graduation receive a Graduation Check DARS report by mail during their last semester and will receive a Degree Certification DARS report by mail IF there is a problem certifying the degree. Additionally, Harpur College students receive a DARS report when they declare a major and new students receive DARS reports showing transfer, AP, and exam credit at orientation.

What do all the symbols on my DARS report mean?

NO

The requirement is not complete. Look for minus signs (-) to indicate which part(s) of the requirement still need to be met.

OK

The requirement is complete.

OPT

This portion of your DARS is optional. It is not required for graduation.

D

This course is a repeat of a course taken previously and is not repeatable for credit. DARS shows the course with credit removed.

X

Same as D

+

This portion of your requirement is fulfilled.

-

This portion of your requirement is not satisfied. Look at the "SELECT FROM:" list for courses from which to choose.

R

This portion of your requirement must be fulfilled. The plus (+) or minus (-) sign next to the "R" tells you whether or not you have fulfilled it.

S

This course has had credits split between two different requirements.

*

This portion of your requirement is optional.

AP

Advanced Placement Credit

EX

Exam Credit

TR

This course is a transfer course.

HS

This is a recognition of a high school language course. It is used for those students who have an admissions deficiency in foreign language.

IP

This is an in-progress course.

AAO

Academic Advising Office

What should I look for on my DARS report?

ID

This ID# is a randomly generated number and will change everytime you run an audit online.. The ID# is to help you identify your audit when printing in a public place.

This ID is your Social Security number on official printed copies of your DARS report sent from the Registrar's office.. Contact the Registrar's Office if it is incorrect.

Date Prepared

Your DARS report was processed and printed on this date. Any changes in your courses, grades, major, minor, or exemptions made after this date are not reflected in this report.

Catalog Year

Your degree program began in this year. The requirements that apply to you are in the bulletin for this year.

Major / Double Major

Your major is printed at the top. If you have a second major, it will print after "Double Major With:". Harpur students declare (or drop) majors at the Department, all other students in their respective Academic Advising Office.

Requirements for double majors are listed separately on individual reports.

OK, NO, +, -

These symbols indicate which requirements are fulfilled (OK) and which are not (NO).

When a requirement has a 'NO' to the left of it, it means that some part of the requirement is incomplete. Look below for plus and minus signs to see which parts of the requirement are fulfilled and which are not.

Minimum Total Credit Hours

DARS shows credit hours completed, credit hours in-progress, and credit hours remaining to complete minimum credit requirements. Additional credits may be needed to meet degree requirements. Remember, though, that you can complete the total hours required and still need to complete course requirements. Total credit hours is only part of the picture.

Transfer Courses

Your transfer courses are shown with a grade of TR. Transfer course grades do not count in your grade point average. The DARS report also shows information about the transfer course right after the grade of TR. It shows either the title (for Schools of Management, Nursing, and Engineering) or the Binghamton course equivalency (for Harpur College).

See your advising office if you think transfer courses are missing from the report. We may not have received a transcript from the sending school or some courses may not have been accepted for transfer.

If you think transfer courses are missing from the report, you should see your advising office. It may be that we have not received a transcript from another school or some of your courses may not have been accepted for transfer.

In-progress Courses

Courses you are taking now are shown with a grade of IP, for in-progress. If you are taking a course with a pass/fail grading option, DARS will not allow the course to be used in a requirement that does not accept pass/fail grades. If you are taking a course as an audit, DARS will not give credit for the course.

Repeated Courses

Most Binghamton courses cannot be repeated for credit. The exceptions are noted in the bulletin. DARS marks a repeated course with the symbol D and shows no credit for the course.

Zero-credit Courses

There are several reasons that a course may carry no credits: it is audited, it is a repeated course, some music or LA&C courses naturally carry zero credits, or it has a grade of F. All no-credit courses are shown in the section of the report near the bottom, titled "COURSES THAT EARNED ZERO CREDIT."

Pass/Fail Courses

Some courses, such as PE courses, are offered only with a grading option of pass/fail. You may choose to take other courses as pass/fail. Courses that are in-progress and taken as pass/fail are listed separately in the in-progress section of the DARS report.

There are restrictions in each of the schools on how pass/fail courses may be used:

All schools - courses taken pass/fail do not count toward the general education requirements (with the exclusion of PE courses).

Harpur - No more than 24 credits of pass/fail (excluding courses offered only pass/fail) allowed. Many departments do not allow pass/fail courses to count toward the major or the minor.

Human Development - No more than four courses of pass/fail (excluding courses offered only as pass/fail) allowed. These cannot count toward the major.

Management - Optional P/F grading is permitted for up to 4 non-SOM courses. Internships, independent studies, teaching practica and most HPE courses are generally given as mandatory p/f and do not count in this total.

Nursing - General elective credit may be taken pass/fail.

Engineering - No more than four free-elective credits for Computer Science and two free-elective credits in Electrical Engineering may be taken pass/fail.

How are courses assigned to requirements?

DARS attempts to optimize the assignment of courses to requirements. Courses are assigned in the order in which they were taken, with transfer courses assigned first. Transfer courses are assigned on the basis of their Binghamton equivalency. DARS will take into account restrictions, such as a limit on the number of pass/fail courses or the number of lower division courses that you may take for your major.

What if course changes such as add/drops or grade option changes are not showing?

Any registration changes you make take an overnight to show up in your DARS report. Wait until the next day to view your DARS audit.

What if certain transfer courses are not showing?

This may mean that the transfer credit has not been processed yet or that these courses were not transferrable. You may want to check with the academic advising office of your school to find out about the status of your transfer credits.

What if transfer courses are showing but are not being assigned to requirements?

This is probably becuase the Binghamton equivalencies aren't specific enough to apply to your major requirements. See your major department or school.

Why does my DARS report show the wrong number of credit hours?

DARS reports sometimes show a different number of total credit hours than the BUSI system, because DARS only counts credits that count towards the degree, while BUSI counts credits for all courses taken.

What do I do if my DARS report is wrong?

If you are a student in one of the Professional Schools (Management, Engineering, Human Development, or Nursing) and you have a question about an item on your DARS report pertaining to your requirements, you should go to your advising office.

Harpur students with questions about General Education requirements or All College requirements should go to the Harpur Academic Advising Office.Questions pertaining to your major requirements are answered by your major department.

If your name, social security number, or address is incorrect, you should contact the Registrar's Office.

What do I do if DARS online is not working?

You should call the Computer Center Help Desk at 777-6420.
